Pinus parviflora 'Fukai' is a intermediate growing, broadly upright selection of Japanese white pine with strong creamy-gold banding on new growth that slowly fades to typical green in the fall and into winter. For majority of the year, it makes a striking statement in the larger landscape, and through diligent candle pruning, can be kept in bounds for the smaller garden.
Typical rate of growth in most areas is 6 to 8 inches (15 - 20 cm) annually, resulting in a broad, but fairly small tree 5 feet (1.6 m) tall and nearly as wide after 10 years of growth.
History:
This cultivar originated as a seedling selected in 1975 by Tage Lundell, Helsingborg, Sweden. There is a very similar cultivar in the trade listed as, 'Fukai Seedling' which is believed by many to be the same plant, perhaps a provisional name. In the Japanese language, 深い (fukai) translates into "deep or profound." It is unsure whether this was the intent.
