This plant has arguably the lightest-blue foliage of all of the parvifloras. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will measure 12 feet tall and 8 feet wide, an annual growth rate of just under 12 inches (30 cm).This cultivar originated as a color sport found on a specimen of Pinus parviflora 'Glauca' in the early 1990s at Hans Hachmann Nursery, Barmstedt Germany. The English translation of Blauer Engel is "Blue Angel" which is a trade designation that Jeddeloh Farms Nursery of Gresham, Oregon patented in 2003.
