Deeply cut leaves are golden brown in autumn, a lovely contrast to the smooth light gray bark. A shallow root system makes this dense shade tree easy to transplant.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Relatively problem free. Aphids, Japanese beetles, and scale are occasionally a problem. Trees that are under stress may suffer from borer damage. Occasional disease problems include canker, beach bark disease, and powdery mildew.

- Like the species, but dense growth and cut leaves that offer a fern-like appearance.
- The group F. sylvatica f. laciniata "embraces all cutleaf cultivars", including ‘Asplenifolia’, the most common form, 'Laciniata’ and less common selections. ‘
- Origin:
- Asplenifolia’ probably originated in France but was introduced in about 1804 by Conard Loddiges and Sons nursery in England (Jacobson, 1996).
- Asplenifolia: asplenium-like leaves (folia), refers to the fern genus Asplenium.
